Thank you for checking out my website and your interest in my journey with Christopher. I’m Benta Shaw, mother of 2 amazing young men. My oldest son, James, graduated from UC San Diego, San Diego State, and is now pursuing his PhD in Mathematics Education. My youngest son, Christopher, who is almost 22, was diagnosed with autism at 2.5 years of age and is now attending the Learning Center that I established for him.
As a single mom who obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, it was paramount that I learned everything I could to empower myself to be Chrisotpher’s advocate, and for him to be the best version of himself. Due to the multitude of barriers and challenges faced in building his future, I immersed myself in the world of disability advocacy and education. This journey has led me to serve on the advisory committee for the Sacramento State Council on Developmental Disabilities and Alta Regional Center’s Self-Determination Committee. I am also a board member of the Supportive Life Institute, Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, and was appointed to the Lanterman Act Hearing Advisory Committee for the state of California. Additionally, I took a position with UC Davis MIND Institute as a Community Education Specialist and took on my local school district for lack of education accountability.
Because of my passion for Christopher's rights as a human being and the desire for him to have the best opportunities in life, my learning center was established. Initially, it was to catch Christopher up on the education missed by creating lessons on language, utilizing various communication modalities, life skills, community engagement, and creating a healthy balance through exercise and his love for Jesus. Consequently, what was established for my loved one is transforming into a place for parents and their loved ones, like Christopher, to seek support, refuge, and resources reducing their struggles and frustration. Moving forward, we are developing employable skills for self-sufficiency. Please enjoy the site and contact me if you have any questions.
